Saint Anthony of Padua - Sermon on Dealing with Evil

Dealing with Evil

It is only in adversity that we come to know whether we have made real progress in goodness...Two things the devil fears above all:  the fire of charity and the well-trodden path of humility...The poor of Jesus Christ, who are marked with the sign of his poverty as long as they are in this world, consider themselves pilgrims and exiled from the Lord (2 Cor 5:6) and walk roughshod over the passing things of this world.  Unless we keep our hearts thus unfettered, how can we come to the Lord?...Nothing apart from God can satisfy the human heart which is truly in search of him. Patience is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit in us.  Practically, we are required to be patient in many ways:  for there are some things, trials and crosses, which come to us from God; others, temptations and enticements, that come to us from our old adversary the devil; still other difficulties that arise from our neighbor: persecution, complaints, unjust accusations. Against all these we must be ever on our guard lest we give way to complaining against the trials our maker sends us; lest again we be led astray into sin, which is what the devil wants; or to be overly disturbed by the thoughtlessness or unkindness of others.  For if we want to have our own way always, aren't we really seeking our reward here below in the things of this life?  Let us couple patience and long-suffering in the spirit of meekness and faith (and so bring forth fruit in patience)! O wonderful Saint Anthony glorious on account of the fame of your miracles, and through Jesus in coming in the form of a little child to rest in your arms, obtain for me of His bounty the grace which I ardently desire for the depths of my heart.

(State your intention)

You who were so compassionate toward miserable sinners, regard not the unworthiness of those who pray to you, but the glory of God that it may once again be magnified by the granting of the particular request (State your intention) which I now ask for with persevering earnestness, Amen.

Pray one Our Father ,

Saint Anthony of Padua - June 13

Saint Anthony of Padua
June 13
Saint Anthony was born in 1195 in Lisbon, yet he took his surname from the Italian city of Padua where he lived out his later years and where his relics still lay in the Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua.
At fifteen years of age, Saint Anthony entered the Congregation of Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, spending the next 10 years in seclusion devoted to scripture study and prayer.
In 1220 the prince of Portugal, Don Pedro, brought back relics of Franciscan missionaries who had been martyred in Morocco.  These relics moved Saint Anthony to desire to die for his faith.  Knowing that there was little chance of this happening while he remained in seclusion, he requested admission to the Franciscan Order.
As a Franciscan Saint Anthony was sent to Africa, but before his arrival on the continent, he became ill causing him to be sent back to Portugal.  Bad weather forced his ship off course and Saint Anthony ended up off the coast of Sicily. It is from there that he went to Assisi and met Saint Francis.   Saint Francis noted Saint Anthony as an eloquent speaker and sent him to preach throughout Italy and France.
St. Anthony spent the last years of his life at Padua.  After receiving the last sacraments he looked upward with a smile on his face.  When he was asked what he saw there, he answered:  “I see my Lord.”  He died on June 13, 1231 at the age of 36.  In less than one year, he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX.  In 1946, Pope Pius XII made Saint Anthony a Doctor of the Church.
Collect: “Almighty ever-living God,
who gave Saint Anthony of Padua to your people
as an outstanding preacher
and an intercessor in their need,
grant that, with his assistance,
as we follow the teachings of the Christian life,
we may know your help in every trial.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.”
