Maximilian Mary Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894, in Russian occupied Poland, and given the baptismal name Raymond. In 1906 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and offered him two crowns, the grace of virginity and martyrdom. She asked him which one he wanted to which he begged for both.
