Saint Martha
July 29
Three visits by Jesus to the home of Martha in Bethany are recorded in the bible; Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-53 and 12: 1-9. Today's Gospel is one of those visits, the familiar story from Luke of the time Jesus came for a visit and while Martha oversaw to all of the needs of her guests, Mary her sister sat at the feet of Jesus and just listened to his words.
Consumed by all the work of preparing the meal, and frustrated that her sister was not working, Martha asked the Lord to tell Mary to help her. Jesus, while observing that Martha was worried and stressed about many things, affectionately reminded her, that the only thing of real importance at the time was being present to him.
I tend to be stressed out and consumed by worry. So I am glad for the opportunity Martha's actions gave to Jesus to teach me a great lesson through this Gospel. One which Fr. James Kubicki, S. J. describes beautifully in his sermon below.
