Saint Peter Julian Eymard - August 2

Saint Peter Julian Eymard
August 2

The essential thing is to strengthen our trust in God, feed upon his truth, dedicate ourselves to his glory as our sovereign love, love him in everything, everywhere, and above everything!”
Saint Peter Julian Eymard

Every day for one hour after the 7AM daily mass, our church community at  San Carlos Borromeo Carmel Mission offers a holy hour of Eucharistic Adoration in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.  On every first Friday this is expanded to 24 hours.

It is a very special time of comfort, peace, prayer, and simple adoration by everyone who walks through the Blessed Sacrament Chapel door.  Even the tourists who do not know this is going on, or may not even be familiar with the practice, seem to sense the sacredness of the chapel.  It is a blessing to have Eucharistic Adoration and as listened to Deacon Warren’s homily  I learned that today’s optional memorial is for Saint Peter Julian Eymard, the founder of two congregations devoted to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Saint Peter Julian Eymard was born in 1811 in LaMure, France.  He worked at his father’s trade until he was 18 when he entered the seminary at Grenoble.  He was ordained a parish priest for the Diocese of Grenoble in 1834.  His deep devotion to our Blessed Mother led him to join the Marists order in 1839. Then in 1845 Saint Peter Julian founded two congregations devoted to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, one for men the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament and one for women the Sister Servants of the Blessed Sacrament.
