Saint Dominic - August 8 (Patron Saint of Astronomers, Orators, Seamstresses)

Dominic was born in  Caleruega Spain around 1170.  When Dominic was around twenty-five years of age, he was ordained to the priesthood. In 1214 he established a religious community in Toulouse, France which was governed by the rule of Saint Augustine. Two years later, Dominic was given permission by Popel Honorius III to start the Order of Preachers or the Dominicans. 

This order would be dedicated to the study and to preaching.  Before his death in 1221, Dominic would establish a number of Dominican priories in university towns (Paris 1217, Bologna 1218, Palencia and Montpellier in 1220, and Oxford in 1221).
