Third Sunday of Advent

Gaudete Sunday

Gaudete in Domino semper (Rejoice in the Lord always). Today, the third Sunday of Advent, the Catholic Church celebrates Gaudete Sunday one of two “joyful” Sundays in our liturgical year. This week’s readings emphasize that the “Day of the Lord” is imminent; in fact it is here, now. This is shown in the miracles of Jesus, as “the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear.” This is reason to be joyful indeed, for if we too open ourselves to the message of the gospel our deafness and blindness will be cured allowing us to freely walk in the light of Christ rather than be crippled and shacked by the darkness of sin.
