Saint Maurice was the leader of the Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century. The Theban Legion which is also known as the Martyrs of Agaunum was a legion of 6,666 man who converted en masse to Christianity and were martyred together in 286. Saint Maurice was chief among those of this legion.
