Eucharistic Miracle - Buenos Aires - 1996

Eucharistic Miracle
Buenos Aires - 1996

On September 8, 2015, my husband and I received a tearful phone call from our son that sent us to our knees.  Our son's bride of less than two months was undergoing a biopsy on her lymph nodes. The doctor suspected Hodkins Lymphoma.  A week later the diagnosis was conclusive - Stage 4 Hodkins Lymphoma.  The treatment, six rounds of chemo which we would learn meant, 12 infusions of chemo therapy given every other week for six months.

The newlyweds, Richard and Melissa, were blessed with an incredible medical team, a devoted family that surrounded them with love and support at every level, and a large prayer circle lovingly referred to as "Our Family of Prayer," that has prayed daily since September for not only the petitions of Richard and Melissa but for all needs of everyone in our Family of Prayer.

After two rounds (four infusions of chemo) Melissa had her first PET scan.  We received the results of the PET just as Melissa was preparing for her fifth infusion November 30.  It was a Thanksgiving Miracle and answer to prayer.  Her PET scan was clear.

Every week during Melissa's treatment I have put up a synopsis of an approved Eucharistic Miracle. Today I put up the 27th blog post in this series.  It will also be the last blog in this series for yesterday on Easter Tuesday (March 29, 2016) we received news that Melissa's PET remains clear and that she truly is CANCER FREE! Thanks be to God!

Eucharistic Miracle
"Do not see in the bread and wine merely natural elements, because the Lord has expressly said that they are His body and His blood:  faith assures you of this, though your senses suggest otherwise." (Saint Cyril of Jerusalem)

One of the most important teachings of the Catholic Church is one of the most difficult teachings we are asked to believe. That is that Jesus is really present in the bread and wine consecrated by the priest during the Holy Mass.  The Eucharist, the Consecrated Host Catholic's eat at every sacrifice of the Mass, is truly the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Creator of the World.  God understands that many of us need help to believe this and from time to time provides us with miracles and proof to help us understand and believe that He is truly present in the Eucharist.  The Eucharist is the supreme Gift of God - a total miracle - for it is in this that He give us Himself.

This weeks Eucharistic Miracle ties in with the first Eucharistic Miracle I posted months ago on Lanciano from the year 750 AD.  Coming full circle so to speak, and tying all together just as Our Lord always does. Lanciano and Buenos Aires both underwent a number of scientific testing's.  The first for Lanciano in 1971 and the first for Buenos Aires in 1999.  Both scientific testing's concluded that in both Lanciano and Buenos Aires the tissue was living tissue (at the time of testing), it was absent of any preservative, the blood type was AB, and the tissue of origin, the left ventricle  of the myocardium, the human heart.

This Eucharistic Miracle took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina - August 18, 1996.  At evening Mass celebrated by Fr Alejandro Pezet a woman came to Father revealing that a Host has been discarded on a candle-holder at the back of the church.  Father Alejandro placed the Host in a container of water and placed it in the Tabernacle as was protocol for non-consumed Consecrated Hosts.

On August 26, 1996, Fr. Alejandro returned to see what he thought would be a container of water with no evidence of the Host, the Host being dissolved. Instead he found that the Host had turned into a bloody substance.  He informed Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis) who gave instruction that the Host be professionally photographed and eventually scientifically analyzed.

The Church of Saint Mary (Parroquia Santa Maria) is located at Av. La Plata 286, Buenos Aires.

Eucharistic Miracle - Silla, Spain - 1907

Eucharistic Miracle
Silla, Spain - 1907

Silla, Spain is located on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula about 10 miles south of Spain's third largest city Valencia.

On the feast of the Annunciation, March 25, 1907, Father Fernando Gomez pastor of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Silla, Spain discovered that the ciborium with the Consecrated Hosts was missing from the church tabernacle.

Two days later, the Hosts were discovered hidden in a garden outside the city.  Father Gomez was called to recover the Hosts and he brought them back to the tabernacle in a solemn Eucharistic procession.

The parishioners provided a sacred vessel to protect the Hosts and they were kept in the Church of Our Lady of Angels.  In 1934 the Hosts were again evaluated and found to still be incorrupt.  At that time, the Archbishop of Valencia declared the preservation of the Hosts miraculous, and the sacred reliquary containing the Hosts was sealed with wax.

In 1936, the official document proclaiming this a Eucharistic Miracle was burned during a fire at the Archbishop's office. In 1982 on the 75th Anniversary of this Miracle, Archbishop of Valencia Miguel Roca undertook a new canonical process by which he officially authorized veneration of the Hosts.

Designed by Francisco Pechuan, the building of the Church of Our Lady of Angels began in 1750 but because of war in the area was not completed until 1851.  The Church of Our Lady of Angels is located at Placa del Poble, Silla, Spain, and the Hosts of this Eucharistic Miracle are housed and protected in the Tabernacle of Our Lady of Angels.  On the 100th Anniversary they were placed in a new reliquary and venerated in Eucharistic Procession.

We do not have to go all the way to Spain to witness a Eucharistic Miracle.  Our Lord comes to us every time we are blessed to receive Him, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity at Mass during the Eucharist.  Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Eucharistic Miracle - Onil, Spain - 1824

Eucharistic Miracle
Onil, Spain 1824
Feast Day - November 24 - 30

Onil is a municipality of Valencia, Spain, located about 24 miles north of Alicante. The history of Alicante is long and complicated, dating back over 7000 years.  Tribes from Central Europe arrived around 3000 BC,  the Romans arrived in 600 BC, and then the Goths around 500 AD.  Then there were the Moors in 700 AD who were in control until 1246 when it was taken by Castilian King Alfonso X.  Being a port city it was attacked over the years, suffered from revolution, communism and a dictatorship. Today Spain and subsequently Alicante is ruled by a democracy.

Eucharistic Miracle

The Catholic church in Onil was completed in 1778.  It is located on the western side of the Palace-Fortress of the "Marques de Dos Aguas."  It consists of a single nave and is decorated with frescoes.

On November 15, 1824, Nicolas Bernabeu who had been an altar boy in the church of Onil committed a sacrilege by stealing the monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament. Nicolas was arrested but did not reveal where he had hidden the monstrance.  In the nearby town of Tibi, a woman by the name of Teresa Carbonell found the monstrance on November 28, 1824 and immediately returned it to the church in Onil.

119 years later on November 28, 1943, Fr. Guillermo Hijarrubia confirmed the authenticity of the miracle, verifying that the Miraculous Host were still perfectly preserved in the monstrance.

Today these Miraculous Hosts may still be venerated at the Church of Saint James the Apostle in Onil, which is located at Calle Mayor, 16 CP 03430, Onil, Alicante.

The high altarpiece (shown below) was erected in honor of the Apostle Saint James "the Greater." In the side chapel off the main nave is the location of monstrance containing the Miraculous Hosts. They have been held here since November 28, 1824. The chapel is called the "Nostre Senyor Robat," meaning the Stolen Lord of Onil.

Eucharistic Miracle Cimballa, Aragon, Spain - 1370

Eucharistic Miracle
Cimballa, Aragon, Spain - 1370
Feast Day - September 12

Cimballa is a small municipality (143 inhabitants -census 2004) located on the basin of the Stone River, in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain.  Cimballa can be traced back to King Alfonso I of Aragon in 1104.

Eucharistic Miracle
In 1370, Fr. Tommaso was pastor of a very small village church in the province of Zaragoza, in the Aragon Kingdom.  On a Sunday while he was saying Mass, he was overcome with doubt about the real presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Consecrated Eucharist. As he spoke the words of Consecration, Blood began to flow from the Host and stained the altar linen.  Fr. Tommaso repented his doubt and retired to do penance as a hermit for the rest of his life.
The Bishop of Zaragoza, Pedro Perez Calvillo placed the Miraculous Host and the Sacred Blood Stained Altar Cloth in the Tabernacle for the villagers to worship.  Because of the continuous wars between Aragon and Castile, the Miraculous Host was moved to the Royal Chapel of the Palace of Zaragoza (Aljaferia).  At the request of the villagers of Cimballa the relic of the Sacred Cloth remained in Cimballa.  Since 1370 many miracles have been attributed to the Sacred Blood Stained Cloth.
In the 18th century a modest parish church was constructed on the site of a 12th century Roman temple in Cimballa. This church was dedicated to the Purification of Our Lady (Presentation in the Temple).  The main altarpiece consists of seven oil paintings on boards that narrate the life of Mary and Jesus.

In a transept to the left of the main altar, there is a chapel dedicated to the Holy Mystery. It is here that the reliquary created in 1594 to store the relic of the Sacred Blood Stained Cloth is housed.

Every year on September 12th, the anniversary of the Miracle, the relic of the Sacred Blood Stained Cloth leads a Eucharistic procession of the villagers of Cimballa.
Today you may visit this church which is at the intersection of Calle Remacha Gregorio and Plaza, in Aragon.

Eucharistic Miracle - Poznan, Poland - 1399

Eucharistic Miracle
Poznan, Poland - 1399

Poznon, Poland lies on the river Warta, about 200 miles west of Warsaw.  The earliest surviving references to the city were found in the chronicles of Thietmar of Merseburg which was written between 1012 and 1018.

Eucharistic Miracle

The Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus and Mother of God the Comforter located at Szewski 18 16-760, Poznan  is one of the oldest churches in the city.  It dates back to 1244, when the village of St. Gotthard founded a monastery for the Dominicans.  It is in this church where the Eucharistic Miracle we discuss today originated.

In 1399 several people who had a great dislike for the Catholic Church offered a young girl money if she would steal Hosts from the Dominican Church for them to desecrate. The girl was enticed by the money and did as requested.

The people took the Hosts to their home, and in their basement they pierced the Hosts with a pointed instrument. Immediately the Hosts began to bleed.  Frightened, the perpetrators decided to throw the desecrated Hosts into a marsh by the Warta River.

A shepherd tending his flock noticed that Three Hosts were illuminated and suspended over the marsh in the air. It took awhile, but he finally convinced Bishop Wojciech Jastrzebiec to go to the marsh to witness this Miracle.

The Bishop held a paten out for the Hosts, and the Hosts descended onto the paten.  The bishop placed them in a pyx.   Those that had gathered at the site of the Miracle proceeded in Eucharistic procession behind the Bishop to the church of St. Mary Magdalene.

St. Mary Magdalene Church is now called St. Stanislaus Church and located at Golebia 1 61-799, Poznan.

By 1400, a papal bull was issued approving the Miracle. In 1406, King Wladyslaw Jagiello of Poland, who had been making pilgrimages to venerated the Hosts at St. Mary Magdalene Church, granted the foundation of the new church  to be built at the site of the marsh where the Miracle took place.  He asked that it be dedicated to the Body of Christ.

Construction of this church took a long time because of the difficult conditions made by the marsh of the Warta River.  By the 15th century the church had become one of the most important sanctuaries in Poland.

This church, the Corpus Christi Church is located at Strzelecka 40 61-846, Poznan.  After 1935 the Three Miraculous Hosts were moved to a new monstrance decorated with the Crown of Queen Jadwiga. This new monstrance is now used during the main Corpus Christi procession in Poznan.

Today, over 600 years later, the Miraculous Hosts may still be venerated in the Corpus Christi Church in Poznan every Thursday when a procession with the Blessed Sacrament takes place.

We do not have to go all the way to Poland to witness a Eucharistic Miracle.  Our Lord comes to us every time we are blessed to receive Him, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity at Mass during the Eucharist.  Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Eucharistic Miracle - Augsburg, Germany - 1194

Eucharistic Miracle
Augsburg, Germany - 1194
"I am with you always,
until the end of the age."

Augsburg, Germany which lies at the convergence of the rivers Lech and Wertach, was founded in 15 BC as Augusta Vindelicorum by Emperor Augustus.

In the 4th century, the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg was formed.  A prince-bishop is a religious bishop who is also the civil governor of a secular principality. In the 6th century the Catholic Diocese of Augsburg was established.  And by 1276, Augsburg had gained Free Imperial Status and became politically independent of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg.

Eucharistic Miracle

In 1194 a woman took the Eucharist but did not consume It. Instead she brought It to her home and encased It in wax. Her purpose was not to commit sacrilege but rather to reserve the Holy Eucharist in her home where she could adore It daily.

By 1199 the woman had an internal conviction that her actions had been wrong and she confessed her action to Fr. Berthold of the Convent of the Heilig Kreuz.  Fr. Berthold had her bring the Host to the convent.  When he opened the wax container he saw that the Host had transformed into bleeding Flesh, and had divided into two parts connected by threads of Flesh.

Bishop Udalskalk proclaimed this a Eucharistic Miracle and the Host was placed into a crystal monstrance for the public to worship. From Easter Sunday until the Feast of Saint John the Baptist on June 24th, the Host was observed to grow and swell.

In 1200 the Count of Rechberg supplied a rectangular vessel to hold the Host for adoration. It remains in this vessel today.

Exile

The Heilig Kreuz Kirche (Holy Cross Church ) of Augsburg dates back to 1143 when a chapel was constructed on the site.  The Gothic style church seen today was built by Provost Vitus Fackler in 1508. Eucharistic adoration of this Holy Miracle has not always occurred.  During the early years of the Reformation from 1517, the Host was hidden. In 1537 the Catholic Church was back out of hiding and the Host was brought out in a Eucharistic procession for the town to adore.

In 1538 the Host went into "exile" again until 1548. In 1632 Eucharistic adoration was expended yet again under rule by the Swedes. In 1800 the French marched on Augsburg and Our Lord still in hiding, was protected by the faithful.

In 1932 Our Lord in the Miraculous Host was handed over to the Sons of St. Dominic at the Parish of the Holy Cross in Augsburg. Eucharistic adoration of the miracle was growing but short lived.   On the night of February 25, 1944, Holy Cross Church was bombed by Allied forces.  Fr. Marianus is recorded as saving the Host and taking it to a monastery in Ottmar and finally Affing, Germany.  By 1945 Our Lord in this precious Miracle He provided for the faithful was back at Holy Cross Church in Augsburg.

Today

The miraculous Host has been kept, quite remarkably, in perfect condition for over 800 years. And obviously this has not been easy. Several analyses have been completed on the Host and It has always been confirmed through these investigations to be human blood.

This miracle in Augsburg bears witness to Jesus' words, "Surely I am with you always, to the end of the age."  (Matthew 28:20)

Yet, we do not have to go all the way to Germany to witness the Eucharistic Miracle.  Our Lord comes to us every time we are blessed to receive Him, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity at Mass during Eucharist.  Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Eucharistic Miracle - Herkenrode-Hasselt, Belgium 1317

Eucharistic Miracle
Herkenrode-Hasselt, Belgium - 1317
St. Quintinus
Cathedral

Hasselt was founded around the 7th century on the Helbeek which is a tributary of the Demer River.  By 1366 it became part of the Prince-Bishopric of Liege and remained so until it was annexed to France in 1794. Today the city lies about 46 miles east of Brussels in Belgium.  One of the oldest buildings in the town center of Hasselt is St. Quintinus Cathedral which dates back to the 11th and 12th century. This is the current home of the Eucharistic Miracle of Herkenrode-Hasselt.

Eucharistic Miracle

On July 25, 1317, the pastor of Saint Quintinus in Viversel (current picture of church shown above -located at Kerkstraat 36, Viversel) was called to give Last Rights and Communion to a parishioner.

While the priest was hearing the confession of the man, a family member went through the priest's bag and found the Consecrated Host that was going to be used for Communion during the sacrament of Last Rights.  The family  member did not remove the Host, but did touch it.

When the priest came to get the Host for Communion, he discovered that it was covered with Blood  and stuck to the linen of the bag.

This Host was not used for Communion that day.  On August 1, It was taken to the Abbey of Herkenrode, 3 miles to the south (located at Zolderse Kiezel 200, 3511 Kuringen, Belgium), where it was shown to the nuns.  The Host that was stained with Blood by then also contained the image of the face of Christ crowned with thorns.  Many of the religious witnessed this.

Tests were done on this Host in the 18th century by the Apostolic Nuncio Carafa and the Bishop of Liege and it was declared a Eucharistic Miracle.

The Sacred Host remained with the sisters at the Abbey until 1796 when they were expelled from their convent by the French Revolution.

The Sacred Host was then hidden by different families who kept it in a metal box in their homes.

In 1804 the Host was taken in solemn procession from hiding to the Saint Quintinus Church located at Vismarkt, 3500, Hasselt, Belgium. This is four miles south of the Abbey and about seven miles south of the Saint Quintinus Church of Viversel.

Saint Quintinus Church dates back to the 11th century.  In the 14th century it was given a Gothic architectural "update".

Today the Sacred Host from the Eucharistic Miracle of 1317 can still be viewed.  It is perfectly preserved and held in a Reliquary where it can be venerated by the faithful.  In 1967, Saint Quintinus was elevated to a cathedral.

We do not have to go all the way to Belgium to witness a Eucharistic Miracle.  Our Lord comes to us every time we are blessed to receive Him, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity at Mass during Eucharist.  Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Eucharistic Miracle - Bois-Seigneur Isaac Abbey, Belgium 1405

Eucharistic Miracle
Bois-Seigneur Isaac Abbey, Belgium - 1405
Feast Day - Sunday after the Feast of the Birth of Mary

Twelve miles south of Brussels lies the area of Braine-I'Alleud which includes the former municipality of Bois-Seigneur-Isaac.

Bois-Signeur-Isaac which literally means "Lord Isaac's Wood" owes its name to Isaac of Valenciennes who planted a wood in the area in the 11th century. The area is famous for the Battle of Waterloo, part of which was fought here in 1815.   The Church Saint Etienne was set up as a field hospital after the battle on June 18, 1815.  This blog post is about a church four miles away from Saint Etienne called Bois-Seigneur Isaac Abbey, which according to the church website was originally built between the 12th and 13th century.

Eucharistic Miracle

In the village of Bois-Seigneur-Isaac, on the Tuesday before Pentecost in 1405, Our Lord appeared to John of Huldenberg.  Our Lord showed John His sacred wounds and during the third time He appeared Our Lord told John, "Go into the Chapel of Isaac, you will find Me there."

While these visions were occurring, the parish priest of the Chapel of Isaac, Father Peter Ost, heard a voice telling him to offer the Mass in the chapel.

According to the oldest document on this miracle, (kept in the Abbey archives) written between 1438 and 1469, Father Ost said Mass on June 5, 1405.  Present in the congregation was John of Huldenberg.

During Mass, Father Peter opened the corporal to begin the Consecration of the Eucharist.  Inside the corporal was a Particle of the large Host which had been Consecrated the preceding Tuesday.  He went to consume the Host, but the Eucharist clung onto the corporal and began to bleed.

John observed this and said to Father Peter, "Do not fear, this marvel comes from God."  Then he preceded to tell the priest of his visions.

The Blood left a stain the length of a finger, three fingers wide on the corporal.

The Bishop of Cambrai, Peter d'Ailly was informed.  He opened the investigations and on June 16, 1410 it was declared to be miraculous.  By 1414 the first procession of the miraculous Blood was conducted at the Chapel of Isaac.

Pilgrims began to flock to the small chapel, so many that more priests and religious were brought in to serve the people.  A generous donation from William II, the Marquis of Namur, who was present at the first procession in 1414, made it possible to lay the foundations for a monastery in 1416 that was completed in 1418.

Over 350 years later, in an attempt at religious toleration, Emperor Joseph II  began his endeavor to modernized the traditions of the Catholic Church.  During his reign, 700 monasteries were closed, and marriage was defined as a civil contract outside the jurisdiction of the Church.

In 1783, the monastery of Bois-Seigneur was deemed unnecessary and religious received notice to vacate the monastery.  Then came 1796 and the French Revolution, when the Monastery was permanently removed.  Or so was thought. The Concordat of 1801 returned the monastery to the Catholic Church.

Fast forward to the 1920's when the Abbey of Bois-Seigneur-Isaac had upwards of 50,000 pilgrims visit the relic of the Holy Blood.  Thirty years later though, the Abbey was in decline. By 2009 due to dwindling vocations it was decided to close the Abbey.

Today

On May 24, 2010 the Lebanese Maronite Order arrived and took responsibility for the Abbey of Bois-Seigneur-Isaac. Today the annual procession of the Holy Blood continues celebrated on the Sunday following the feast of the Birth of Our Blessed Mother in September.

600 years later, the precious Blood can still be viewed. It is held in a gold monstrance at  the Bois-Seigneur Isaac Abbey (St. Charbel's Monastery) is Rue Armand de Moor 2 1421 Ophain-Bois-Seigneur-Isaac (Braine-I'Alleud).

What I found so interesting when it came to this miracle was that a piece, a crumb basically, of the precious Host was left behind in the corporal.  That Crumb was the Body of Our Lord.  Even a crumb of what we consume in the Eucharist is the entire Holy Body and Blood of Our Lord.

The second thing that I found interesting about this miracle is that at the times the Church has been attacked, such as, Church modernization in 1783, French Revolution 1796, and the current progressive modernization that has taken place since the 1950's - the Church always survived.  As Our Lord said, "I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20)

So with that, we do not have to go all the way to Belgium to witness the Eucharistic Miracle.  Our Lord comes to us every time we are blessed to receive Him, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity at Mass during Eucharist.  Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.
