Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary - August 22

The feast of the Queenship of the Virgin Mary was instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1955 on May 31, as the conclusion to the Marian month of May.  With the reform of the liturgical calendar it was moved to a few days after the Assumption on August 15th.

Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God - January 1 (World Day of Peace)

 

  “On this first day of the year,
may the Lord help us all to set out
more decisively on the path
of justice and peace.” Pope Francis  

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, our Lady's greatest title. This feast is the octave (eighth day)  of Christmas. According to the 1962 Missal of Saint John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is also the Solemnity of Circumcision of Our Lord.  And since 1967, January 1 has been designated as the World Day of Peace.

Novena

Novena

A novena is nine days of prayer for a special intention, petition, grace or thanksgiving. To make a novena means to persevere in prayer fulfilling our Lord’s teaching to continue praying and never lose confidence in our Lord’s providence.

“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For whoever asks receives; whoever seeks finds; whoever knocks is admitted.” (Luke 11:9-10)

Saying a novena for a specific request does not mean that your request will be granted. A novena is not magic, nor should they be treated in a superstitious manner. A novena is a prayer in which we petition always for the will of God and for His great glory.

May the Month of Mary Our Mother

In the late 1700’s, a Roman Jesuit began the practice of dedicating the month of May to Our Blessed Mother. Yesterday during First Friday Mass the children of Holy Spirit School crowned Our Lady with a beautiful ring of roses, those who earlier this month received their First Communion honored her Son by wearing their beautiful white gowns and suits. The first graders were in charge of the readings and their precious pronunciation of words brought tears to more than one eye. This was a beautiful beginning to a weekend where we celebrate our own mothers and Our Blessed Mother Mary who intercedes for us every day bringing our prayers to her Son Jesus.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come,
before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen

I pray blessings of grace to all mother’s, from all walks of life, in all circumstances, which are still with us, including my own mother at 95 years of age. To those who have gone to their eternal reward, including my blessed mother-in-law 15 years at holy rest, I pray:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May the souls of the faithful departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
