Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord
August 6
August 6
Today’s feast day is so significant that we hear the story
proclaimed in the gospel twice every year.
Once on the Second Sunday of Lent where we read from one of the synoptic
gospels, Luke 9:28-36, Matthew 17:1-9,
or Mark 9:2-10 (depending on the Church calendar year) and a second time on
August 6th.
Today’s feast, the Transfiguration of Our Lord commemorates
the day on Mount Tabor, when Our Lord appeared before Peter, James and John in all
of His divine glory.
The Transfiguration was of such importance, that Saint
Peter would write, “We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known
to you the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been
eyewitnesses of his majesty.” (2 Peter 1:16)
