“Enjoy yourself as much as you like,
just keep away from sin.” Saint John Bosco
just keep away from sin.” Saint John Bosco
Saint John Bosco was born on August 16, 1815, in Castelnuovo, near Turin,
Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood
in 1841 and went to work with the youth in the urban slum of the city of Turin.
Dedicating his life to their education both in the arts and Christian life, he founded youth clubs and boarding schools with the soul purpose to guide them to the knowledge of Jesus.
His theory of education was a preventative
system rejecting corporal punishment that was popular at the time. Saint John Bosco believed in surrounding the youth with love as well as a firm fatherly guidance, regarding each as if they were his own son. He believed in uniting their spiritual life with their work, study and play, most importantly placing students in surroundings that removed them from the near occasion of sin. Saint John Bosco was interested in souls, the young, poor and troubled, to bring them the Gospel message and give them hope and direction. In 1854 he founded the Salesian Society and
in 1872, the Salesian Sisters to work for girls.
