Day 46
1 Samuel 13 - 16
Bible Time Period: Royal Kingdom
You established a kingdom on your servant David and promised him an eternal throne: Establish your kingdom in our midst.
You established a kingdom on your servant David and promised him an eternal throne: Establish your kingdom in our midst.
Prayer
Most Holy and Divine King, when the covenant people of Israel petitioned You for a king, You granted their petition, not by relinquishing Your authority as the divine king of all Creation, but by appointing an earthly king as Your anointed representative. Help us to remember, Lord, that our earthly rulers are subservient to Your divine authority and that our first allegiance and our obedience belong to You. Please send Your Holy Spirit to guide us in our lesson as King Saul contrives to use the Law and his own understanding to further his desires and ambitions and his failure to acknowledge his allegiance to You above all else. Save us Lord from the same temptations and failures. We pray in the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Agape Catholic Bible Study, 1 Samuel Lesson 5)

Saul
God led Samuel to a man named Saul from the tribe of Benjamin. Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it on Saul's head anointing him. To "anoint" means to put oil on something as a sign of consecration. The oil was a visible sign that Saul had been chosen by God.

Until this time, only priests had been anointed. But after Saul had been anointed, he began to prophesy. The Spirit of God had come upon him. The people might have rejected God from being king over them, but God was showing them that he would still rule them through their king. Saul would be king not because the people had chosen him, but because God himself had chosen him.
