Day 61
1 Kings 16 - 19
Bible Time Period: Divided Kingdom
Israel split into rival kingdoms and fell into idolatry: Help me to choose your kingship over other loves.
Reflection
In spite of the evil done by the kings of Judah, God promised to maintain a “lamp” for David in Jerusalem forever. This symbolizes the permanence of the Davidic
dynasty in the city where God has chosen His name to dwell. The situation is different in the northern kingdom
of Israel. There is a long succession of
kings from a number of different families and factions following Jeroboam.
Elijah
A ninth-century BC prophet who was active in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reigns of Ahab and Ahaziah. The account of his prophetic ministry is found in 1 Kings 17 - 19, 21 and 2 Kings 1 - 2.

Elijah was a great and determined defender of the worship of the Lord against the religious syncretism and apostasy that were then plaguing the country under Ahad and his wife, Jezebel. He fought against pagan cults, in particular the cult of Baal, and was given the power to work miracles as a means of convincing Israel that Yahweh was their true God.
The prophet Elijah constantly declared the Lord's unique and utterly supreme divinity. He fought, at times alone, with immense courage against the idolatry of the period. Elijah demanded not merely the repudiation but the outright extermination of idolatry. (Catholic Bible Dictionary, General Editor, Scott Hahn, page 239 - 240)
