Giuseppe Sarto was born near Treviso, Italy. He became a priest, then bishop of Mantau. In the 1890s he was elected cardinal and patriarch of Venice. He was pope from August 1903 to his death a few months before the outbreak of World War I, on August 21, 1914. Pope Pius X was known for opposing modernist interpretations of Catholic doctrine.
