Constantine the Great is not listed in The Roman Martyrology but is worshiped on this day by the Eastern Church and by that of the West in areas of Eastern influence. He recognized the great spread of Christianity and conceded freedom of worship to Christians by the Edict of Milan, in 313. According to legend, before the battle at Milvian Bridge, Christ appeared to him in a dream, promising him victory under the sign of the Cross. He was baptized on the point of death in 337.
