Day 72 - 90 Day Bible Reading Challenge - Nehemiah 5 -8 Great Adventure A Journey Through the Bible

Day 72

Nehemiah 5 - 8

Bible Time Period: Return
You brought the exiles back to Canaan; they rebuilt the Temple and Jerusalem and were taught once more from your Law:  Rebuild my broken heart and life as I return to you.

ReflectionThe author has arranged his material less with an eye toward chronology and more to subject matter.  For example, the narrative of Nehemiah is interrupted in chapter 8 for the insertion of Ezra reading the book of the Law of Moses.  Ezra's activities continue through chapter 10, and then chapters 11 and 12 return the focus to Nehemiah, who repopulates Jerusalem and dedicates its newly refurbished walls.

The writer thereby connects two key religious events, the reestablishment of the divine law by Ezra and the dedication of the walls by Nehemiah.  The two events epitomize the key roles played by Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest, the civil and religious authorities working together to repair both the faith and the fortifications of the Holy City. (Catholic Bible Dictionary, General Editor Scott Hahn, page 645- 646)
