Joseph was born in Copertino, Italy in 1603. He became a Conventual Franciscan friar at Grottella in 1625 and three years later ordained a priest. At times he manifested his desire for union with Christ in ecstatic moments and periods of levitation. This aroused the suspicions of the Inquisition who tried him in 1634 and found him innocent.
